Azar & Muriel Receive 2017 Tidewater Home Funding Education Scholarships

John Owen Azar, a Granby High School graduate from Norfolk, Virginia, and Danielle Malia Muriel, a Salem High School graduate from Virginia Beach, Virginia, have been awarded a 2017 Tidewater Home Funding Education Scholarship.  John, the son of Stephen and LeeAnn Azar, and Danielle, daughter of Mel Muriel, will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.  Tidewater Home Funding scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors from the Hampton Roads community that have been accepted to and will attend an accredited college, university or trade school after graduation.  Recipients achieved exceptional academics, received glowing references from her teachers and administrators, excelled as student-athletes, gave of their time as volunteers and demonstrated a tremendous work ethic.

A National Honor Society member, John was a member of Model UN, the French Honor Society, and is an Eagle Scout.  He participated with We Feed Norfolk, Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team, and the Granby Elementary School mentoring program.  A varsity wrestler, and football team captain, John excelled in his academics and athletic activities working part-time.  John plans to study Business Administration as a student at the University of Virginia.

A National Honor Society member, Danielle was Vice President and Treasurer of the Spanish National Honor Society, while assisting as a Spanish tutor.  In addition to her many academic achievements, Danielle participated on the varsity soccer and field & track teams, volunteered for the event concessions at Salem, and worked part time.  Danielle plans to study Biology (Pre-Med) as a student at the University of Virginia.

It was an honor and a pleasure to present this year’s Tidewater Home Funding Education Scholarship to John Azar and Danielle Muriel.
